Renewable Energy Certificates
Case Study: Australia’s Mandatory Renewable Energy Target
Australia has established a national target to increase electricity generation form renewable energy sources. A REC (renewable energy certificate) is equal to 1MWh of electricity generated and is issued by the Clean Energy Regulator to approved renewable energy generators. RECs can be sold to electricity retailers that must surrender a certain percentage of their total sales, creating a secondary revenue stream for renewable electricity generators.
